mating habits of birds
Jan. 26th, 2016 12:12 am[ the owl cafe was tucked somewhere behind the business district, among a series of rather tasteful and chic restaurants that mark the entry to the city's bustling art centre. the cafe boasts a good variety of owls that are well-cared for and are available for the customers in certain times. overall, it's a good place to take someone for a date ....
.... but terrible with regards to food. kei isn't even sure that whatever tanaka and nishinoya are cooking in the kitchen would count as edible. on the other hand, they have never failed to feed their pets and the two of them are adamant in making sure that the owls are happy and content, and it shows with how big and strong the owls are in this particular cafe compared to most owl cafes. indeed, one of the grey, horned owls have taken such a liking to kei that he started to wear leather over his shoulder and on his arms simply because the rather energetic owl wants to be involved in everything that he does, and often snaps at his ear gently if it wants attention. on the other hand, their coffee isn't impressive and is a shade below mcdonald's. their sandwiches are the type that kei used to make when he was living on his own until he caved in and lived with his brother instead, who couldn't bear to see kei suffer eating terrible food. it's not that the food isn't edible, they haven't landed anyone into a hospital - at least not yet - but the thing that comes out of the kitchen could certainly be better.
the soups were probably the most decent thing, but that's because sugawara was in charge of the soup and he actually knows how to cook. unfortunately, he's not always around. kei and the other server, hinata, usually had to help in the kitchen once in a while. to the credit of their chefs .... they used to be a lot worse with regards to what they cook, and the bland, sort of uninteresting fare they bring out was an improvement over what they used to serve. noya and tanaka are persistent, however, and they promise to roll out a new menu that's more palatable sometime in the summer. after all, none of their servers are on the sexy side and people earn more glares from kei than anything else, especially if they try and take the owl from him without asking permission first. he's grumpy and he hates everything, but he likes the owls and he's grown particularly fond of this horned one, and hinata has taken to teasing him that he spoils him quite often. none of that helps bring in more customers, and following an incident the week before involving a guy with rat's nest for hair and his owl, well. they certainly need more people.
though they do have their fair share of regulars. some of the owls have recognized them and have taken to hooting softly whenever they arrive. that afternoon, the great horned owl was keeping an eye on the door for his nemesis, while kei works diligently wiping the tables. since hinata called in sick for the day, he has to do a lot of things by himself, and he's only halfway through his list. when he heard a customer come in, he just greets them automatically, without even looking at their face - ]
Good afternoon. I'll be with you shortly.
[ while the great horned owl turns its head and puffs out its wings, possibly challenging this particular customer as he enters. ]
